Nationalism and national identity

What conclusions do you draw from historical projects of nationalism and national identity? How have nations and people – both subjects and citizens – grappled with the question of how identify and define themselves? How is this question further complicated by empire? (Also consider: is the question of nationalism different than question of “what is a nation?” Why or why not?)
